I visited Wales once; the people were rude and unfriendly until my sister & I got fed up and began speaking in Irish and all of a sudden the locals began speaking in English and pretended to befriendly. Was that just an unfortunate incident or are the Welsh always that rude?

  1. My very first holiday was to Wales, when I was 12 years old.(I had never seen the sea in my life before.) We walked into a pub for lunch, and the locals,(who were speaking English, before they realised WE were English) went quiet, then started speaking in their own native Welsh language, and although we couldn't understand what they were saying, we felt their hostility towards us.Disguted by this incident, we walked out, and I got very upset, and took it very personally, wondering how they could show such rudeness, and in front of Children.

I have never been back to Wales, apart from catching the ferry to Ireland, but even though I was dying from thirst, I refused to give them my custom, and waited until we were on the ferry before buying a drink. We were treated entirely differently in Ireland, and the Irish people couldn't do enough for us,even speaking in English (when they too have their own language) so we didn't feel alienated, and we felt totally welcomed. It's a pity the Welsh people don't live by the same standards, and put ancient hostilities behind them, as the Irish have done.

I live in Cornwall these days, and work in a small supermarket. We get visitors from all over the world, as well as from England, Ireland, Scotland, AND Wales, and my job depends on tourism, and how I treat people. I would lose my job if I treated people as the Welsh do, and would NEVER make people from other places feel like I did on my first ever holiday. Surely Wales is as dependant on tourism, as Cornwall is? But at the end of the day, it's their loss!!!

  2. Conas atha tu?

We are proud of our welsh language

Tir agan teanga tir gan anam as you say.

It's not trying to be rude we speak in the language of your hearth our first language Welsh. It's nothing like the Irish language situation, Welsh is spoken by so many people naturally on a daily basis. People who have a problem with that should mind their business and stay away or try and embrace the culture.

  3. you're a very racist person elegante.  First you're having a go at the English on another posting, now the Welsh.  Is there any nation worthy of your respect?

  4. i went there and spoke only english (or spanish) while i was there.......wow, that is perhaps the most friendly country in the world...ok, so i have only been to 30....and there WAAAY more countrys than that in this world.

it depends on who you meet.  it also depends on if you treet wales as a seperate country, or if you act like you are in england.

let the graces of their country win you over and they will see you appreciate it.  they will love you.

IMHO, i can say 3 or 4 places where people were SUPER friendly.....wales, basque country, el salvador, northern thailand (countryside).....mongolia (countryside)...i even found seoul, korea to be super friendly.

wales would be first on this short list.

  5. Visited Wales quite regularly, and always find them very welcoming and friendly. Unless you make the mistake of assuming that you are still in England - they are a seperate country and very proud of their heritage. A bit like the Scottish and Irish....They (quite rightly) get a bit upset when people confuse their heritage.

  6. me and my friends got lost in Wales (trying to find our way out). when we asked for help, no one would speak in English to us, especially people, in the local pubs who looked at us like we were from a different planet, and then some of the local shopkeepers. It took us a fair while to find someone who would help us

i have nothing against them speaking Welsh in Wales. They are free and wlecome to do that. But when someone is asking for help, and you don't answer them purely because that person is English it's disgusting.

also, some of the local children also took it upon themselves to throw eggs at us, and our car because we were English

(go on you can give the thumbs down all you want, but this is a true story, and it seems other people have had similar experiences)
