Unhitchthetrailor victorious at Fairplex in the Barretts Juvenile after disappointing at Del Mar
The 2-year-old colt Unhitchthetrailor finally gets it right, when he represented trainer Gary Sherlock in the $87,800 Barretts Juvenile at Fairplex racecourse in Pomona California on 18 September, 2011.
Winning doesn’t come naturally to the son of Kawain, the colt has to really grind out a result, and after some poor performances Unhitchthetrailor turned it on at Fairplex when he really had to win.
It took Unhitchthetrailor three attempts to break his maiden, with the runner up finish in his first attempt and a third place finish in his second attempt, the juvenile colt won it convincingly in his third attempt.
All his attempts came at Hollywood Park, and on one fine day, under one fine jockey, David Flores, Unhitchthetrailor took the race from the scuff of the neck and nailed the 5 ½ furlong maiden special weight dash in 1 minute and 4.81 seconds.
After his maiden win, Unhitchthetrailor had a couple of bad trips at Del Mar, where he ran in the Graduation Stakes and I’m Smokin Stakes, both on Poly Track.
Unhitchthetrailor could not even manage an on-the-board finish, and rolled in 4th in the Graduation Stakes over a distance of 5 ½ furlongs on 3 August, 2011, and in the I’m Smokin Stakes, the colt was a distant 6th on 5 September, 2011.
However, on 18 September, 2011, at Fairplex the story unfolded a little differently, where Unhitchthetrailor put it all together to strut his stuff where he dominated the field under new jockey Christian Santiago-Reyes.
It wasn’t a front running display from wire to wire, Unhitchthetrailor was kept off the pace and was positioned in third waiting for a clean trip.
Jockey Christian Santiago-Reyes, found an opening on the outside, as he exploited the little day light that he had, and attacked outside into the back stretch.
Unhitchthetrailor opened up the field when he passed by the five sixteenths pole, and thereafter no one came close to the fast running 2-year-old colt.
Unthreatened, Unhitchthetrailor won the 6 ½ furlong race by a considerable margin of three lengths over the 61 to 1 long shot Taylor Marini, who also ran a really good race.
Unhitchthetrailor covered the 6 ½ furlong distance in 1 minute and 21.28 seconds, and has now gone on to win twice out of his six starts.
