UniCredit ladies Open concludes with Italian Diana Luna on top
UniCredit Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour (LET) has come to an end with Italian Diana Luna coming out victorious in a four-day battle among the fiery European contingent.
Luna overpowered her opponents with a stellar seven-under, 65 on a weather-struck final day. Luna won her fourth title on the tour with her last victory coming on 2009 SAS Masters in Norway before her first child, Elena, was born.
“I am so happy, I mean, I have been playing great all week. I’m happy that I won with a good score and I’m very, very confident and feeling great,” said a jubilant Luna. “It was special, something that hasn’t happened since 2009. It’s been two years now
and it’s so nice to be back there.”
Luna, who originally hails from Rome, finished off the week with a whooping 24-under, 264 with her individual round scores of 67, 67, 65 and 65 on the scenic Golfpark Gut Häusern in Munich. Rising Finish player, Minea Blomqvist finished in the second place
with her final round score of 70, seven shots behind the leader.
Blomqvist was however, far from disappointed and considered the runners up finish an outcome of her year’s hard work. Also a mother of one-year-old kid, Blomqvist made the cut after a gap of several months. She last made it through in 2010 Finnair Masters
in August, and finished tied for 18th. The Finn has won twice on the tour.
First round leader, Becky Morgan had a disappointing day and settled for the third place with her 16-under, 272. Virginie Lagoutte-Clement of France, who thrashed the course record on the second day of the tournament with her dazzling nine-under, proved
to be a one-day wonder and closed the final with a disappointing score of 72. She settled for an aggregate of 15-under, 273 tied for the fourth place alongside Caroline Masson of Germany and last week’s Turkish Airlines Ladies Open winner Christel Boeljon.
A total of 10,400 spectators showed up to witness the final days proceedings and tournament director Cyprien Comoy had to halt the play when the course was hammered by lightning bolts and heavy forecast. The event received an overwhelming response from the
German spectators.
The Formula-1 and Tennis lovers rejected the commonly perceived notion that the country usually turns a cold shoulder to the golf tournaments. Home grown player, Sandra Gal finished tied for seventh place along with Spain’s Tania Elosegui and Swedes Caroline
Westrup and Louise Stahle at 13 under par. Gal also commended the tournament committee for excellent arrangements and termed the event an overall success.
“I think the UniCredit Ladies German Open was a fantastic event and the LET can really be proud of it. I hope it’s going to continue to grow and more people will continue to watch over the next few years.” Said Gal.
Victorious Luna collected her winner’s cheque of €52,500 and a glittering Audi A5 Convertible.
