Unicaja, CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos win – Euroleague Group B second week Review – Part 2
CSKA Moscow 94 - Brose Baskets 74
Tibor Pleiss led Brose Baskets with 17 points, on a 9 for 10 shooting from the free throw line, and also grabbed four rebounds. Julius Jenkins tallied 15 points while PJ Tucker ended with 10 points and six rebounds for Brose Baskets.
CSKA Moscow got things going early, scoring the first seven points of the opening period and carried a 10-point lead, 24-14, into the second. CSKA absolutely took over the game in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting team
23-16 to push their lead to 17 points, 47-30, at halftime. Brose fought back in the second half, but the Russians had their measure throughout.
Panathinaikos 81 - KK Zagreb 62
Reigning Euroleague champion Panathinaikos won their second consecutive game of the season with an 81-62 victory over KK Zagreb at the Zagreb Arena.
Romain Sato led the winners with 13 points and seven rebounds. Nick Calathes and Steven Smith chipped in 12 points each apiece while Mike Batiste tallied 10 points in the victory. Euroleague MVP Dimitris Diamantidis paced the winners
with eight assists.
Sean May topped all scorers with a Euroleague career high 23 points and nine rebounds while Damir Mulaomerovic had 15 points for Zagreb, which dropped to 0-2 in Group B.
The Greens came out strong and held an 18-12 lead with two minutes to go in the first quarter before Krunoslav Simon successfully drove to the rim to make it a four-point contest, 18-14. However, Panathinaikos pulled off a 6-0
run to push their lead to double figures, 24-14, after opening period.
Panathinaikos were simply unstoppable during the second quarter as they stretched their lead to 15 points, 31-16, early. They maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the period and racked up eight unanswered points in
the last three minutes of the first half for a 45-22 lead at the interval.
The Greens continued to play strong defence in the third quarter and widened their lead to 30 points, 52-22, during the first five minutes of the quarter. The Croatians did not get any closer than 28 points in the third period
ensuring Panathinaikos entered the last frame with a 61-33 lead.
Zagreb got off to a solid start in the fourth quarter and scored the first ten points to put 18 points apart at 61-43. However, Panathinaikos responded with an 11-3 run to make it 72-46 and seal the game.
