Unicredit Ladies German Open: Carin Koch happy to share lead with three other contenders
Swedish Carin Koch was happy to see her name atop the leaderboard after she fired a 67 to share the lead in the first round of the Unicredit Ladies German Open at Golfpark Gut Hausern.
Koch never expected to display such a stunning performance in the opening round, as the field of the German Open is quite strong, featuring most of the prominent LET (Ladies European Tour) stars.
Some of the key contenders include the defending champion Diana Luna, who has vowed to repeat her last year’s performance, Laura Davies, the 2010 champion, Carly Booth, Karen Lunn and Lindsey Wright.
Despite the psychological pressure, the Swede remained composed most of the day and played comfortable strokes on almost all the holes.
Koch kicked off the round with plenty of confidence, as she recorded her first birdie on the very first hole. She then parred the next four holes and went for another birdie on the par-4 6th hole.
Although in good form, the first-round leader faltered on some holes.
She could not judge the 7th hole and posted a bogey. On the back nine, the Swedish golfer exhibited an even more solid performance, as she shot five birdies. She cheered the German crowd when she
made three consecutive birdies on the par-4 16th, par-4 17th and par-5 18th hole.
Analysts said that Koch was expected to show such a good performance, given her track record. However, her near-flawless strokes helped her put pressure on her rivals. They said that the pro star will likely
go for another major breakthrough in the next rounds.
Speaking to the media about her spectacular performance, Koch said that she is thrilled about grabbing an early lead. She said that she is hoping to do the same in the second round.
“It’s really fun to play good golf and I really like this golf course so it’s nice to come here and play well,” Koch shared during her interview.
“I played pretty steady today and made some good putts which you have to if you’re going to shoot a low score. I’m happy about my game,” said Koch, who has her husband Stefan on the bag”.
