Unicredit Ladies German Open: Caroline Westrup hopes to maitain good form in second round
Swedish Caroline Westrup appeared poised to shine in the second round of the Unicredit Ladies German Open, after she posted a 67 in the opening round to share a lead.
The tournament, being played at the Golfpark Gut Hausern, Germany, is featuring several top-ranked LET (Ladies European Tour) stars. The Swedish star grabbed most of the attention after she beat most of the
big names in the roster.
Commentators said that Westrup was expected to play such a good game, as she was not considered hot favourite for the title. The player has been performing average for the last several months.
Despite the strong field that is also featuring four previous title holders of the German Open, Westrup stunned the spectators by making calculated strokes on most of the holes.
She opened the round in an impressive style, as she recorded a birdie on the very first hole. She parred the next three holes and made yet another birdie on the par-5 5th hole. On the 6th,
she could not make a balanced stroke and ended up posting a bogey.
On the back nine, the spectators witnessed an even more balanced game from the Swede. She recorded three birdies. With modest winds sweeping through the course, most of the players found the course easy, although
some of the holes still proved tricky for some contenders.
Pumped by massive support from the crowd, Westrup amazed the fans when she drained two back-to-back birdies on the difficult par-3 15th and the par-4 16th.
Other players sharing the first-round lead with the Swedish prodigy are Carly Booth, Stefanie Michl and Carin Koch, who registered a 67 each.
Commenting on her amazing start in the prestigious tournament, Westrup said that she is very happy to see her name along with the first-round leaders. She added that she made a few mistakes on some holes, but
remained strong overall.
“I’m pleased. I left a few birdie shots out there but I played solid off the tee and my irons were my strength today. I rolled in some putts when I need to and hit good shots, so gave myself a lot of opportunities”.
