Unicredit Ladies German Open: Laura Davies happy with performance but regrets missing a birdie-putt in playoff
English Laura Davies, who won the Unicredit Ladies German Open in the 2010 season, came close to winning the 2012 edition of the tournament, but was sidelined by a lesser-known contender, Anne-Lise Caudal,
in playoff.
Davies appeared unfazed by the dramatic defeat, but pointed out that missing a putt in playoff was quite disppointing.
The tournament, played at the prestigious Golfpark Gut Hausern, Munich, featured a strong field comprising key LET (Ladies European Tour) stars. Some of the prominent players included the defending champion
Diana Luna of Italy, Carly Booth, who won the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open 2012, Lindsey Wright, Karen Lunn and Sandra Gal.
Davies, who knows the field and course well, was considered one of the hot favourite contenders for the coveted title. She displayed a balanced game right from the start and troubled most of her rivals, but
misjudging a birdie-putt in the final moments, which hampered her from grabbing yet another LET triumph in Germany.
The English star battled Caudal in playoff after both the contenders shot an overall 275 each. Before jumping to the top spot in the fourth round, the two rivals were standing at 4th position on
the leaderboard.
Pernilla Lindberg, Rebecca Hudson and Bree Arthur were standing tied for the 1st spot at the end of the third round, but Caudal and Davies surged past them to move into playoffs.
Davies kicked off the tournament in an impressive style, as she registered a 69. She kept the momentum going in the second and third round as well, carding a 71 and 68, respectively.
Analysts said that although Davies was far stronger than the winner, her last-moment mistake caused her to lose the match. They added that the English prodigy was better in strokes than her rival.
However, Davies appeared to be calm when she talked to the media at the end of the tournament, saying she did not regret letting the Cup slip out of her hands, but missing the last birdie-putt was a disaster.
“I played really well and I spoke to my mum this morning and said if I shoot 66 I think I’ll win and I was one short of that and Anne-Lise beat me in the play-off, so at least we knew what we had to do and
nearly did it,” the 48-year-old superstar said.
