Unics improve to 3-0; rout Emporio Armani 59-44 - Euroleague Recap
Unics have been a treat to watch in this Euroleague 2011-12 season.
After finishing the regular season with two straight wins over Asseco Prokom and Union Olimpija, they pushed the momentum in the top 16 and on Wednesday night, used a rock solid defence to down EA7 Emporio Armani 59-44, extending their unbeaten record in the top 16 to 3-0.
Henry Domercant attacked right from the start and led the Unics with 16 points on 4 for 11 from the floor including 2 for 4 from the long range and 5 rebounds.
"I think we played a good game tonight, especially in the first half. There are some lessons we can learn from this game. In the second half we didn’t score offensively like we could. Our opponents have made a run, they almost cut the gap to 10 in a few minutes". Henry said
Petr Samoylenko netted 12 points while Terrell Lyday tallied 10 points. Vladimir Veremeenko controlled the defence with 11 rebounds while Mike Wilkisnon grabbed 9 boards as Unics out-rebounded Armani 46-31.
Unics coach Evgeny Pashutin was thrilled with the outstanding show from his players.
"I’d like to thank all my players. Some of them were not so good in this or another game’s component, but all of them did well defensively. We conceded just 44 points, while we played against a strong attacking squad with top rate shooters as Fotsis, Gentile, Nicolas, Cook and Bourousis"
Only one player from Armani - Nicolo Melli - managed to penetrate the Unics defences. Melli scored game high 17 points on a near perfect shooting, netting 7 for 8 from the floor as other sharpshooters were held strongly by the Unics.
Unics started dominantly and were already in the driving seat within the first seven minutes of the game, ahead by 17-7. Pushing their authority further, they shut the quarter with at 20-12.
A fierce 12-0 spurt in the opening minutes of the following segment, capped by Lyday’s jumper, strengthened Unics hold further as their lead mounted to a mammoth 20 points 32-12. Armani showed some fight afterwards and replied with an 8-4 spurt. Still, by the end of the 2nd quarter, they found themselves off-pace; behind by 16 points.
The third quarter was a low scoring affair as neither team managed to get into double figures. Unics earlier lead thus allowed them to end the frame with a 45-27 advantage.
Armani had a huge task of eliminating a mammoth deficit in the deciding frame but they failed to find their groove.
