Unics make it to the top 16 by overpowering Galatasaray Medical Park 72-61: Euroleague Recap
Unics have reached the top 16 in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague 2011.
They did it by downing Galatasaray Medical Park 72-61 in a game played at the Basket-Hall Arena last night. Their record has augmented to 5-2 and even if they lose the remaining three games, it won’t hurt them much.
On the other hand, Medical Park have dropped to 3-4, however they are still in a run for the top 16.
It was an exciting game as both teams were neck to neck by the end of the first half. However, in the next half, Unics not only shored up their defence, they also attacked with full throttle to turn the game completely in their
favour.
Terrell Lyday marshalled the Unics with 17 points including 5 for 8 from the two point range and a near perfect 4 for 5 from the free throw line. Henry Domercant pounded 13 and pulled down 3 rebounds while Lynn Greer accumulated
12 on the night. Vladimir Veremeenko also put up an all round performance and finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
For Park, only Jaka Lakovic managed to end with scores in double figures. He scored 12 points.
Both teams preferred long range shooting in the beginning.
Unics drilled three while Park netted two in the first 4 minutes to make it 10-9 in the favour of Park. Medical Park then reeled off a 6-0 burst, led by Darius Songaila, Joshua Shipp and Jaka to boost their lead further to 16-9.
However, Unics did not allow opponents to run away with the show and bolted back with a 10-4 run in the last few minutes, ensuring that they ended the first quarter only behind by 1 point.
The second quarter was a see saw battle as the lead kept on shifting from one side to other. Park managed to attain a 4 point lead 32-28 halfway through the frame but a three pointer by Greer made it close again. Two free throws
in the last minute by Zaza Pachulia, elevated Park’s lead, but a mid range jumper by Greer followed by two charity shots by Terrell closed the first half with Unics in front at 35-34.
Terrell in partnership with Domercant scored quickly and took Unics ahead by 45-37 in the first few minutes of the third frame. That was the time, when the game started slipping away from Park. By the ninth minutes, Unics lead
was in the double figures at 56-45.
A 10-2 spurt, led by Greer and Terrell at the start of last frame, completely shifted the game in Unics favour as the scores reached 67-51. Medical Park succumbed to the pressure and managed to score only 10 points in the remaining
time to complete yet another defeat.
