Question:

Uninsured motorist v collision?

One day I noticed that someone has hit my car, so I had my insurance guy come up to appraise the damage. Then he asked me if I would like it to be covered under collision or under uninsured motorist portion of my insurance. What is the difference between the two? And would any of them make my insurance go up?

Thanks!

  1. collision pays for damages to your vehicle due to a collision impact, this would be a collision with another vehicle, a curb, pothole, object in the road and such.

This DOES NOT pay for someone elses damage that you cause that is Property damage under your liability coverage.

Some states do have Uninsured motorist Property damage.  Some have a deductible of $250 which may be lower than your collision ded.

UMPD as it is known does not usually raise your rates with most major insurance companies.  This is where you separate the good ones from the bad.

Talk to your adjuster as they will advise you the best way to go based on the state you are in.

  2. You do not say what state you drive in.  You have to have collision because it covers hitting a pedestrian or car or any other object.  Uninsured motorist insurance is just what it says, it is for hit and runs or if someone is driving your car and does not have insurance.  I have both and the charges are not a lot.  If you have been with your insurance company along time it you should be able to negotiate pricing.
