Pregnant Wife Un-insured?

I'm an independent contactor, and I Gross around $2800.00.month Pre-tax/Pre-expense. Is there anything I can do to get my wife insurance. According to the local health depart I"M RICH!!!! lol, anyway. She's pregnant, and obviously nobody wants to pay for the bill including me. I agree with the opinion I made the bed now I have to lay in it, but on the other hand, I've paid 5% + of every dollar I've ever made into it! Does "taxation without representation ring a bell?" If I'm not mistaking, that was a major contributing factor that started the American Revolutionary war and gave us our independence from Britain. All sarcasm to the side, can anyone give a tip other than work out payments, and deliver myself like they did before hospitals ever came along?

  1. Nope, if she doesn't qualify for Medicaid, it's too late to buy health insurance with maternity benefits - or even without.  No one will write a policy on someone currently pregnant, except welfare - which is Medicaid.

If you call to the hospitals where you want her to deliver, many times they'll pre-negotiate a price, if you pay before the birth, that's way less than half the cost if you wait until after.

Also, if you live near a birthing center, that's a way to get a non-home birth, with professionals, at a fraction of the cost of a hospital delivery.

Lastly, not being at all sarcastic, most midwives train longer and harder at birthing, than the average doctor straight out of medical school.  They're actually usually MUCH more experienced, and better trained, than doctors, at handling a variety of complications.  All that 95% of doctors will do, is C section you.  Midwives actually know HOW to deliver a baby breach, twins, with the cord around the neck, or with shoulder distocia.  Doctors will pretty much just section one of the above situations.

Which, of course, adds drastically to the cost.  So please don't eliminate the possibility of a midwife assisted birth, when you consider your options.

  2. you don't say where your from and that can change the answer.  (2800.00 goes alot farther in some states) anyway most hospitals have clinics for uninsured/underinsured pregnant women

  3. I have a friend that does full family medical plans for like $85.00 - $150.00 month. Not sure if it covers existing preg but it would not hurt to ask him. Cris Badgly 1-888-589-2929

I also found something new that I have not jumped into yet that will cover her, however you will have to pay it back-just on more affordable payments. http://www.carecredit.com

  4. I thought your funniest quip was "I made the bed now I have to lay in it."  Har har.

You can't take bets once the game has started, and apparently you've checked into government assistance.  You just have to save money like the rest of us.

As far as taxation without representation, wait until your kid is 16 and getting taxed, then explain why they can't vote yet.  ouch.

  5. Derrick,

If you live in California, there is a state program called Access to Infants and Mothers (AIM), which is a program for mom's to help with prenatal/delivery/postnatal claims costs. You can check state of california websites to enroll.

If you're not in California, I would imagine other states would have similar programs, however I'm not specifically familiar with the programs.

There is not a private insurance company that will insure your wife because she's already pregnant.  She's considered too high of a risk.

    Good luck!
