Union Rags dominates Fasig-Tipton Fountain Of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Union Rags did not let anybody ruin his wonderful record and grabbed a convenient win in the Grade 1 Fasig-Tipton Fountain Of Youth Stakes, held at Gulfstream Park in USA on Sunday, February 26.
It was his fourth win out of five races so far in his career. With such an extraordinary track record, the three-year-old is holding the favourite tag for the Kentucky Derby.
The colt was running at Gulfstream Park for the very first time, but he didn’t give any impression that the track was new to him. The trip became quite comfortable for Union Rags, when the leading Kentucky contender, Algorithms was taken out of the race
due to an injury threat.
After Algorithms’ exclusion from the line-up, Union Rags was sent off with the second highest odds of 6-5. Despite the fact that the colt was making his first outing after an unlucky defeat in November last year, he showed an impeccable run.
Starting off the show brilliantly, he chased the leaders at a good pace. In the final stages, Michael Matz’s colt further pumped up his speed to hold a decent lead. After picking up a decent advantage, the youngster made no mistake and sustained his dominance
till the end.
Stopping the clock in one minute and 42.68 seconds, he outplayed News Pending by four lengths. The Dale Romans-trained displayed a good show throughout the race, but he was helpless in front of Union Rags’ extraordinary skills.
Discreet Dancer, who was 4-5 favourite, ended up third on the chart. Only ½ of a length short of the favourite, Neck 'n Neck settled four in the list. It was a disappointing result for Neck 'n Neck, who was among the leaders during most part of the race.
However, after being surpassed by Unions Rags, the three-year-old lost his momentum, letting his other rivals enjoy the party. Fort Loudon came fifth whereas the last two positions respectively went to Philip A. Gleaves’ Csaba and Nicholas Zito’s Casual
Trick.
Union Rags has been doing a wonderful job since his debut in July 2011. The connections are expecting him to continue the good work and produce even more good results in the forthcoming races.
