Union Rags likely to upset Bodemeister and Gemologist in Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs
Union Rags is likely to upset the two big guns, Bodemeister and Gemologist, in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented By Yum! Brands, taking place at Churchill Downs in United States of America (USA) on Saturday, May 5th.
The 1m2f has attracted 20 high profile entries. On a fast track, the contenders will compete for a hefty cash prize worth $2 Million.
Among the participants are: Daddy Long Legs, Optimizer, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Dullahan, Bodemeister, Rousing Sermon, Creative Cause, Trinniberg, Alpha, Prospective, Went The Day Well, Hansen, Gemologist, El Padrino,
Done Talking, Sabercat, I’ll Have Another and Liaison.
Union Rags in not in the best of his form these days. His performance was not up to the mark last time out. Luck also did not favour him that day, as he missed the runner-up place only by a neck’s distance in the Grade 1 Florida
Derby at Gulfstream Park.
Nonetheless, one should not take him lightly. Michael Matz’s trainee is expected to bounce back and demonstrate an outstanding show today.
On the other hand, Bodemeister is likely to earn the highest starting price. Bob Baffert’s trainee has been maintaining the highest standards of speed since his debut. In mid April, Bodemeister clinched an easy win in the Grade
1 Arkansas Derby at OaklAWn Park.
Gemologist is another major player. The three-year-old has been unbeaten since the start of his career. At the start of last month, Todd Pletcher’s trainee completed his hat-trick, beating Alpha by a neck’s distance in the Resorts
World Casino New York City Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct.
Alpha would look to take revenge of his trouncing, but it is going to be a herculean task for him. Hansen and Dullahan are also looking solid, but it would be a brave move to support them.
Bodemeister and Gemologist are heading the betting card, but our vote goes to Union Rags. The Chadds Ford Stable-owned seems to be the only one with the ability to shock the aforementioned duo.
If Union Rags manages to dominate the proceedings, the contest for the runner-up place will be mighty entertaining. Good luck to everyone.
