Union Rags tests negative for “frog-juice” but his injury will not allow him to continue racing
Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced that all participants of the Kentucky Oaks and, Derby would be tested for “frog juice” also known as dermorphin, a drug known to enhance the performances of runners.
It was a sigh of relief for most connections as all runners tested negative for this drug, including the Michael Matz trained Union Rags.
After finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby, the three-year-old colt went on to win the Belmont Stakes but, will not be able to continue the season because he sustained an injury. The trainer reflected on this and stated:
“It’s been one of those years,” Matz commented. “One minute you’re on top of the world, and the next day you’re looking up at it.”
The trainer had high hopes for the runner and, it is a pity that glory had to end in the middle. The handler has plans of running him in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, the Travers, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Matz is hoping that the son of Dixie Union, foaled by mare, Tempo makes a full recovery and returns to the track as soon as possible.
He believes that there is no reason the runner wouldn’t make an excellent older division runner. He is a strong horse and will be one to watch out for when he makes his comeback.
Union Rags’ season might have ended but, Matz has his hopes pinned on, Colonial Flag, who will be looking to dominate the Grade 1 American Oaks at the Betfair Hollywood Park on 14th July, 2012, over a distance of 1 1/4 miles.
The daughter of Pleasant Tap, foaled by mare Silk N' Sapphire, has proved herself capable of taking on large distances and, will be able to comfortably complete this race. Mainly being a turf runner, the three-year-old filly has the advantage of the
track in this race.
Matz discussed the filly and stated:
“We thought we’d get her going as a 2-year-old, but never quite got there.”
He also stated that: “We’ve had the American Oaks in mind for her for some time.”
