Question:

Unique, random, weird attractions?

I was wondering where else I could go to other than the main tourist attractions. I am looking for things that are unique and quirky and not considered a typical attraction. off the beaten road type of thing.

I am looking for attractions similar to Amsterdam's s*x Museum, flea markets, Madame T's wax museum [ok that's a popular attraction, but it is weirdly entertaining), New York's LOVE statue, etc. something like this:

  1. If you are in, near, or just visiting Glasgow, then don't miss a trip to Paddy's "flea" Market. It was founded over a century ago by Irish immigrants - hence the name "Paddys" It is situated between Clyde Street, beside the river Clyde, and the Bridgegate, referred to locally as The Briggait. The market consists of a main lane, which has recently lost all of its old cobbled surface - which has been replaced with modern tarmac. If you progress down the lane you will find many wee inshots under the overhead railway line where all sorts of goods may be purchased. You can get cheap tobacco, alcohol, jewellery, watches, pirate CD's, vitamins, in date and out of date foodstuffs, computer gear and clothes. If you can't find what you are looking for- just ask about amongst the 'dealers' and they will usually get it for you tomorrow ! The market is open every day in the year except for Sundays, when the whole place closes down in order to allow the dealers to attend their respective places of worship ! TIP -- Bring a pair of leather gloves with you as you might find some of the goods on offer a wee bit 'warm' to the touch - but, by and large the vendors at Paddys are licensed "honest" traders and a great bunch of folks to haggle with.

The Barras Market is only a 10 minute walk up Argyle Street. Once inside, you can expect to see very wide selection of indoor and outdoor stalls, which sell all types of goods to appeal for all ages and interests. There is a saying that you can find anything at the Barras and it's probably true. Here you can buy: DVDs, console games, CDs, PC accessories, toys, sweets, cakes, fresh meat, clothes, novelties, football memorabilia (especially Rangers and Celtic), fragrances/cosmetics, antiques, furniture, souvenirs, collectibles, books, magazines, videos, household items, food/drink, bric-a-brac and much much more! If you’re a first time visitor, then allow yourself atleast an hour to browse the many indoor and outdoor stalls. The majority of stall holders are friendly and approachable people, alot of them have developed very successful stalls here over the years. It is usually possible to haggle with the stallholders, especially when you are buying a few items from the same stall. Aslong as it is done without taking it too seriously, and then it is a fun way to get even more of a bargain! In general, the appeal of the market is that not only will you always find what you are looking for, but also you’ll find it much cheaper than in high street shops. The Barras has developed a reputation of the years as being one of Europe's main sources for pirated DVDs, music and software. These items are not as easily available to the public as they were previously, largely due to a police unit now located within the market. However, these items can still be found from the entrances and along the main street leading up to the market. The sellers are usually young teens, who are selling the illegal goods for others. It is a 50/50 chance that either your DVDs will be excellent internet downloads/DVD copies or it could be completely unwatchable duds which were filmed in a cinema. It is a gamble at your own risk. As mentioned before, the police presence means that the Barra’s has lost some of its “roughness” but means that it is now more safe and enjoyable for all ages. If you are a tourist then I would recommend that you buy your Scottish souvenirs from here, as you will find that they are a lot cheaper than other shops within the city centre. The atmosphere is friendly and vibrant, bustling with lots of local bargainhunters with families who visit the market everyweek. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the city centre on Saturdays/Sundays, fun for everyone!
