I am getting married in April 2009. We are a laid back couple and want to have a fun reception that doesn't cost a arm and a leg. We have a club house, but want to know if you have been to any cool receptions or have any ideas. I think we are going for a casual preppy feel. I just want every one to have fun, dance, drink and eat good food. Any ideas??????

  1. HAVE A HAWIAN TROPICAL ONE WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL

  2. We had a luau. It was super fun complete with a palm tree moonwalk for the kids.  Totally casual, way fun!

  3. We're having a Fiesta reception at a local Mexican restaurant, complete with mariachi band, enchilada/fajita buffet, and (yay!!) wedding pinata!!!!  My point is, do what makes you smile.  My fiance and I are SO not the hoity-toity ballroom type, so why pretend on our wedding day?

Also, I think it's perfectly fine to have a fun, casual reception after a Catholic wedding.  Trust me, after a long Catholic wedding Mass, it will be a relief to your guests that the reception is laid-back and fun!

  4. i don't know about cool ideas but i think of a country club as casual preppy...maybe you could have it at a country club then have a putting contest after everyone's loaded

  5. Rent a photo booth for your reception. Tell everyone take pictures of themselves in it! Great memories!  Also, I always thought fruit in a glass vase would make a great inexpensive centerpiece. Depending on the colors of your wedding you could use lemons, pears, kiwi, etc...

  6. Sure, you can have a casual reception after a catholic wedding.  Now days, it seems like anything goes when it comes to weddings and receptions.  I was just at a wedding this past weekend and yes they had a photographer but also had those disposable cameras on each table for the guests to take pictures as well.  The dinner was very "causal" we were not served the food, it was more of a buffet style where we went and got our own food.  Maybe try something like that.  Maybe between the wedding and dinner, have different kinds of munchies set out for the guests while they are waiting for the meal and invite them to arrive at the reception site early to enjoy them while mingling with other guests.  Just do whatever you would want to make it as casual as you want.  Maybe indicate that the reception is a casual one and to show up to the reception causally dressed maybe?  Just do whatever you please.

  7. Everyone knows that I love tea so we are having a casual, fun, tea themed reception even though our wedding is in January.  For April, I love the idea of pretty patterned kites and parasols for a park-like theme.

  8. You don't say where it is you live, but if the weather is good in April, how about on a big boat? Many will rent out for parties, etc. and take a dinner cruise.  Call some local museums, they too rent for weddings - find a funky one for some fun! Art galleries will too. Does your area have a warehouse district that you could rent an empty space and turn it in to whatever you choose.Look through your phone book, not just in the 'banquet hall rentals', but throughout the entire book - you never know what gems you can find. Many office buildings have rooms you can rent that aren't exactly advertised. Some places will even rent large lobbies for parties!

Unless it's in the same place there really isn't any correlation between the ceremony site and the reception type.

  9. Look into interesting attractions in your area. I want to have my wedding at a butterfly conservatory, which has banquet rooms that I can have the reception in. The price is reasonable since it is all after hours. I don't know that you live by me (and I am not asking if you do), but start thinking outside the box and look at interesting places to see if they have packages or if they could arrange something. If you are into animals, look at a local zoo that may be able to accommodate you after hours. Look at tourist websites to see if there is anything you haven't heard about or that you may have forgotten.

If you just want to have it at your house, just do whatever you want! The important thing is to have a good time in a way that suits you. If you think of something fun that's unique, great. If not, don't feel like you need to make it memorable for everyone else. For you ant the people close to you, the important thing is celebrating your wedding and having fun. It will stick in their mind without something unique.

ADDITION: Of course you can have a relaxe reception. THe Catholic church is very strict about weddings, but they really can't control what happens afterwards.

  10. My wife had white cowgirl boots under her wedding dress.

We met country dancing.  our napkins had a girl lassoing a boy.  I thought there should be truth in advertising.

We left a disposable camera on every table.  We got lots of very nice spontaneous pics.  Don't be supprised if you get some upskirts.

  11. There was a cool little video I saw online that was when the Bride and The Groom were going to have their first dance, it seemed like they were going to have the normal slow dance, but then Baby Got Back came on and everybody was so surprised, then started jamming out themselves. That was both unique and cool.

  12. yeah you can...Just have a bbq type wedding with music and a buffet style food and drinks..tell people if they want they can change there clothes to "comfy" clothes
