Question:

Unique Honeymoon Ideas?

Hi - next year I will be getting married, and am looking for something totally unique to do as a honeymoon. I am looking for things like playing elephant polo, vacationing in the Falklands (it will be winter there so I doubt she will be too thrilled), or taking the train accross India (she does not like Indian food so she will not be too thrilled with that either).

I am looking to spend about $5000, but will go over for fabulous ideas - I have my thinking cap on and would be eager to hear what you guys can come up with.

  1. a fighter jet flight in South Africa ;-)

  2. Maybe a hot air baloon ride, or sky diving, or maybe bungee jumping down in New Zealand. If you want to be more romantic, maybe horse riding along a beach at sunset somewhere (or maybe rent a horse and ride it to a secluded part of the beach or something and have a picnic)

  3. My aunt, uncle, and cousin vacationed in Turkey.  It was absolutely wonderful, they said, and the pictures were stunning.  They went camel riding, how cool is that?!?

  4. If you want adventure - great. But whatever it is, you really ought to pick something your fiance would enjoy too!

Visit your ancestral home or the ancestral home of your bride - or both.

I hated the place because I happened to be alone (it's a romantic *couple* type of place and quite expensive to boot) - but you could go to Maldives (or some similar, cheaper place like Mauritius, Bali or Fiji) for scuba diving and the beach.

Sri Lanka on the other hand is close to Maldives, much easier than India, and has the beach, interior sites to hike, an elephant orphanage and friendly people - also great gems for that remembrance gift for the "missus."

Belize is english speaking, not too far from the States (assuming that is where you are from) and they would also have lots of scuba diving, beach and jungle things to do - I believe they also have swimming with dolphins there. Check out swimming with dolphins at any place. (Florida, Hawaii, California, Mexico, even the Azores.) Apparently it is high on lots of people's wish list.

Take an African safari. They can be so cool! You can even take balloon rides over the serengeti. Climb Kilimanjaro while it still has snow on it. This is a very doable climb.

One of my favorite places is Angkor Wat in Cambodia. There are gnarled old trees growing out of the ruins. It is the one place that didn't make the new seven wonders of the world that should have. And southeast asia is cheap - good bang for your buck! Can't say enough good about Cambodia. The only downer is the killing fields of Pol Pot - but ignore it or see it first and everything else is uphill from there.

You don't have to go to outerspace to experience this, but it would still be a "once in a lifetime" experience to take a parabolic flight that produces moments of weightlessness. (The movie "Apollo 13" was filmed this way.) They have these types of flights in Russia and in the States. You'd have to see if the Russian military is making them available to civilians or not. Otherwise there is one private company in the States called Zero G - www.gozerog.com. It's $4150 per person.

Take a two stage honeymoon. Go to Everest base camp in either Nepal or Tibet (no need to actually kill yourself climbing to the top - the hike to base camp will do) and then go on to the Dead Sea in either Israel or Jordan. The theme: "Ain't no mountain high enough / ain't no valley low enough - to keep me from you!" ;-) If you really want to include "ain't no river wide enough" - go on to stage three of the honeymoon at the Amazon basin in Brazil! ;-) (These are the highest, lowest and widest such places on earth.)

  5. You must check out http://www.flybymetravel.c om 's adventure section.  Go to the site, click on adventures, scroll down and select YTB Adventures.  You can even use their Honeymoon registry to augment your budget.
