Question:

Unique bird song, east central Illinois. I have a nest at the top of a fir tree. Very loud, distinct call?

I haven't seen the bird. I know it was in the tree, because of the song I heard. The nest seems to be quite large (8-10 inches in diameter, and length). The call was very striking--there were three of us in the immediate vicinity, and we all turned our heads.

It seemed to be a "chuk-chuk-chuk-chuk", or a similar "cuch-cuch-cuch-cuch-cuch", repeated at 30-60 second intervals, approximately 5 times within a few minutes. That's when I really started looking and noticed the nest, at the top of a fir tree, about 40 ft tall.

Any ideas?

  1. Sounds like a Dickey Bird or a t*t Mouse.
