Question:

United Airlines: Carry On. Questions.?

I was wondering if I'm allowed to bring my carry on suitcase which is 20 x 14 x 6.5 in AND my tote bag? My tote bag is probably somewhere around 17.5 x 15 in which is not the size of a purse. I'm going to have a lot of stuff in my tote bag; my ds, phone, digital camera, mp3 player + more.

The United Airlines site says:

United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.

Would that count for any of my carry ons, particularly my suitcase, because I want my time at the airport to be as smooth as possible. I'm flying domestic by the way.

Thanks for any help!

  1. You will probably be okay, but they may question your suitcase if it looks close to being too large.  They are cracking down on carry-on size now that they're charging for checked baggage and expecting more people to try carrying on excess.

    Your tote bag may be allowed as a personal item if it's about the size of a typical briefcase.  If you are required to check an item, it will likely be your suitcase.  So be ready for that just in case.

  2. I've worked with united airlines for quite sometime as a reservation agent, for carry ons you are allowed 1 personal item, your tote bag and your suit case. I have concerns with your suitcase. Try checking the dimensions and check should not exceed....so i would suggest looking for another suitcase or if you want try calling the customer service hotline and check the dimensions if they'll allow that. It is actually dependent on the aircraft you will be using for your flight.

    Carry-on baggage

    For travel worldwide on United, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer.

        * A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin.

        * Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 in/22 x 35 x 55 cm (length + width + height) or 45 linear in/112 linear cm (the length, height and width added together).

    United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.

    and for please take note.

    Carry-on baggage restrictions for flights from/within the U.S., the European Union and Japan

    Liquids, gels and/or aerosols are permitted through security checkpoints. Items must fit in one clear, re-sealable quart or liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 3 oz/100 ml or less. In the European Union, items must fit in one clear, re-sealable liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 100 ml/3 oz or less

    hope this helps

  3. Depending on the size of the plane, you might not be able to fit it into the overhead compartment.  If that's the case, they will issue a planeside checking ticket when you show your boarding pass at the gate. They will unload those bags first and you pick it up in the jetway
