Scotland is in a commanding position against the United Arab Emirates in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Intercontinental Cup match being played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The tourist finished day two with a lead of 131 runs and need to take eight more wickets in order to
win the game.
Scotland started day two with an overnight score of 121 for the loss of five wickets from 52 overs. Wicket-keeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-David-Smith-c90329 and Richie Berrington - the two batsmen who remained unbeaten on day one – resumed the innings.
The duo played the opening half an hour cautiously making sure that they do not lose an early wicket in the day. But once they successfully passed that phase they opened up a bit and started playing their shots.
UAE were left high and dry by the sixth wicket stand between the two batsmen. Both batsmen complimented each other well during their partnership, which fetched 99 runs for Scotland with Smith scoring 54 of these runs.
The new ball did the trick for the UAE, and it was the experience of medium pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Arshad-Ali-c76710 that came in handy for the hosts, as he was able to break the partnership that had caused so much trouble to them.
The young and aspiring Scottish cricketer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Calum-Scott-MacLeod-c49129 put on another useful partnership of 55 runs before the latter
was trapped in front of the stumps- off Ahmed Raza’s bowling- after scoring 19 runs.
The Scottish skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gordon-David-Drummond-c60348, made his way to the centre at the dismissal of Raza. The captain failed to lay much support to Berrington, and got out after adding just 7 runs to his tally. At that point the visitors had piled 284 runs for the loss
of eight wickets.
UAE struck again eight runs later, this time it was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Goudie-c1448 who had to take the long walk back. With just one wicket at hand, Berrington took the onus upon himself. The 24-year-old went aerial and in the process got to his maiden first-class century.
However, aggression got the better of Berrington (110) and he became the last Scottish batsmen to fall at the score of 305.
Berrington’s innings made sure that Scotland get a healthy lead of 205 runs. UAE vanguards, Faizan Asif and Arshad Ali, were not intimidated by the lead and came out firing from all cylinders, as they put on 56 runs for the first wicket.
The debutant, Asif, targeted Goudie from the start and this forced Scotland to make abrupt bowling changes. Drummond eventually put a leash on Asif (46) by uprooting his stumps in the 17th over.
Scotland closed day two on a high note when they took the wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Swapnil-Mantri-c92119 Patil in the final over of the day thus restricting the hosts to 74 for the loss of two wickets.
