Where/how can I find out if my ancestors were United Empire Loyalists?

  1. There are associations with some of the loyalists listed.  Just  do a search.

    One of my gggggrandfathers was supposedly a loyalist, but I have not found much info about him.

  2. Canada was kind enough to publish the rosters of the UEL. They had to petition to be included, then they were given remuneration in Canada (usually in Nova Scotia or the Niagara District) based on their losses. Their heirs are also well-documented. Here's the definitive site on the UEL. http://www.uelac.org/

    Ancestry.com has the books on film, as do most major libraries. Most good research libraries also have the books on their shelves. If you can get back to 1790-1820, you should be able to link into that part of your lineage. I'll snoop on your Harris lineage and see what I can find.  Here's the list of Harris' who were accepted as UEL.
