Question:

United Nations? Does it actually do anything?

Why do we have the United Nations when it doesn't really do anything? It seems like it takes a long time to determine if something is a genocide, and while it decides thousands are being slaughtered. It tries to create a better world, but no country faces tough penalties for not abiding by its mission statement.

Why doesn't the UN enforce energy policies and make them binding laws that each country must follow? If there's a majority in the UN votes, why can't it being an international law?

I really don't understand the point of having a mock council when none of its beliefs are enforced.

I think the UN is admirable, but I just don't understand its mission.

  1. The United Nations doesn't exist.

  2. "Why doesn't the UN enforce energy policies and make them binding laws that each country must follow? If there's a majority in the UN votes, why can't it being an international law?"

Because the UN has no authority to enforce those policies.  The member nations, while they use the UN as a common meeting ground, have never surrendered their sovereignty.  A good example would be the federal government, to which all the other states have surrendered power.

That said, the UN does do important humanitarian work, and works to limit conflict where it can.  Perhaps if we provided some real military power they could do more?

  3. Well, i'll just give the clear definition on why the UN was established.

It's established to Check every state whether it would be the government, the people, the environment, etc. It's main purpose as a whole is to stop any global war from happening, which for now is doing a good job since most of the powerful countries are allies.

What separates the UN from every other body of nations is that it's not afraid to use it's force. Think of the United States, the whole of Europe, and some parts of Asia's military under one body. Terrifying isn't it? terrifying if you're against them i mean.

  4. " the United Nations when it doesn't really do anything?"

The aim of the UN was to prevent widespread chaos, and durning the coarse of years, I think it's done okay.  And believe me, I don't think it's perfect...but it's necessary, imo.

Internal politics and methods.  I agree...they should atleast allow a set of rules in which private forces or nations can behave, in order to just maintain the peace without a broad consent.

Essentially allow people save people...don't let a few hold others back.  Just have reasonable standards.

Because national laws e.g the American Constitution supersede it.  It must be a national treaty, and it must apply equally.

To end, if it no-longer exists, it's likely that nations will splinter off like they did in world war I....and we'll be right back at it.  The way it's constructed now, ensures a level of communication and bond in goals.  Peace is not guaranteed, but atleast it's stated.

War will be here now and forever...the scale of it is what we should worry about.

  5. Its all part of the New World Order globalisation and harmonisation

  6. The UN has been faltering a little as of late, but I still think they play a very important role.  If nothing else, they at least provide a forum for discussion and compromise.  Who knows, maybe the cold war would have become violent if the US and USSR didn't both have permanent seats.

  7. We have the United Nations so America can hide its agenda's in there. Since america founded and runs the united nations.

  8. Sadly, the United Nations is driven by politics and not humanitarian concerns. They are totally useless and have not helped anyone.

  9. It hosts a place where nations can come together and resolve things without misunderstandings.  Yes, there are tons of problems with the UN due to it's size and politics but what's the alternative?  Should we all go back to isolationism and attacking each other over pride?
