United States' Mohamed Hassan wins gold medal in Boy’s Y-14 Foil event: Fencing News
The final day of 2011 Pan American Youth Championships featured the gold medal for United States' Mohamed Hassan. He defeated Nolen Scruggs in Boy’s Y-14 Foil competition to win the title of the day at Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
The 2011 Pan American Youth Championships were merely conducted for the cadet fencers, having ages between ten to fourteen. The championships began on May 27, where some festivals regarding fencing were organised. The events in the category of Y-10 were taken place on the second day while Y-12 category events were conducted on third day. Y-14 events took place on the final day of the championships.
Hassan started the final day with pool matches of Y-14 category, where he prevailed over all the bouts. Eliminating each opponent, Hassan reached at quarter-final stage where he faced Gregory Rebus. Sequentially, he reached at the final against his home country’s Nolen Scruggs, by beating Mexican Rebus and Jose Narvaez. The final bout took the gold medal victory for Hassan with the pinnacle spot. Scruggs took home the silver medal on the final day of the Championships. The US fencers Yueh-Ting Tsai was able to grab the bronze medal in that competition.
The United States boys took home four medals including one gold medal, one silver and two bronze medals. Khai Fujita lost his bout in semi-final round of Boy's Y-14 Epee competition and ended the final day with a bronze medal. Only seven male fencers could list in the top ten fencers of the each category.
