(I dont intend or mean to sound or be ignorant so please dont think i am, this was just a point brought across to me by some friends today and i found it interesting.)

Add any information you would like to

**Why do we appreciate US soldiers... They risk their lives in iraq... for what. What benefit to the UNITED STATES have become of the war in iraq besides thousands of soldier casulties?

**Why do we not appreciate Police Officers? They do everything and anything they can to make our lives better IN THE U.S. not in iraq. they worry about our problems and our problems only. What good has become of having a well established police force across the nation? (think about it) what would there be without police officers.)

All opinions welcome. and again, i didn't mean to offend anyone in any way. I do appreciate the work both sides do for our country!

  1. We appreciate soldiers b/c they give up so much of their lives...sometimes even give their lives...in order to protect this country. Iraq is just what is happening right now. Soldiers do not pick and choose what war to go to. That falls solely upon the politicians. Soldiers trust that their leaders send them to justified conflicts and wars. Today it is Iraq...tomorrow it will something else. Do not confuse the role of the soldier with the role of the politician. And I don't know who you are referring to, but i'm pretty certain that the only people who do not appreciate the police are the criminals. But, if you want to know people more actively appreciate soldiers than the police is b/c soldiers are going through extreme hardships, sacrificing a lot. Police get to go home at night...deployed soldiers do not. Police don't drive around always having to watch out for roadside bombs. Police aren't separated from their normal lives and family for a year or  more at at a time. That is probably why people focus more on soldiers than police.

  2. You have a point, but the reason we appreciate US soldiers is cause of their willingness to stand in harms way, just the fact that they are there just in case, makes us feel safer as a country.

The reason people dont appreciate police officers as much I feel is that they associate them with tickets and such.  People dont often think about what it would be like without cops on the streets, they just think they do nothing other than drive around and give tickets.  So they are taken for granted.

  3. They both protect you one just is more in your face than the others. The soldiers fight for your freedom and your safety , police protect your local streets. In my opinion excluding the military police the police are trained different and not as disciplined. There is a reason the soliders are respected more in most cases

  4. You should appreciate our troops, even if you think this Iraqi situation is utterly nonsense.  Respect our troops, but hate the war all you want.  These guys signed up because of the sense of pride in ensuring the safety of American citizens and its commonwealth.  These guys are sacrificing their lives for the sake of others.  It isn't like they're dead-hit the reset button and they're alive again.  They die, that's it, game over!  When I was in Iraq (during the Invasion), they were happy that we have eradicated Saddam tyrannical regime.  He killed thousands!

  5. I'm a soldier as well as a Police officer and the respect barrier stays the same regardless of which uniform Im wearing.. then again I dont work for a large department that has a bad rap like NYPD or LAPD

  6. The people in Iraq, are just starting to get the freedoms,

you have now, but you take for granted. Such as the right

to become a Police Officer, many of which, who are now

serving in Iraq. to keep our freedom.

If we did not need police officers. there would be no reason

to put locks on their lockers. <}:-})

  7. Why do local police departments act like para-military groups?   They have all the trappings of being military yet they are not.  Uniforms,  rank insignia and titles,  they play taps and bagpipes at funerals,  they do 21 rifle salutes.   Yet they are not military.

Could it be that the police themselves respect our service men and women so much they want to be like them?   If you respect the police and they respect the military then should you not also respect their opinions on the military?

Also,  for a soldier to desert when you really need them the most is pretty rare.  They might desert before they get deployed but once into the heart of the battle,  they stick it out.  Contrast that with the disgusting dereliction of duty by the New Orleans Police Department during and after Katrina.  The people they were suppose to serve and protect were left at the mercy of criminals and looters.   The cops in mass ran and deserted right when they were needed the most.

So bottom line,   I respect the military more based upon their service and behavior and risks they take.    Katrina really changed my opinions of how professional cops are when the going gets really tough.

  8. When ur a soldier... u accept the fact that u wont see ur family for 1 year or more.. and that alone is a pain and for that i respect this soldiers. They chose to suffer so us americans can eat mcdonalds and have s*x with our wife whenever we want. While they suffer in that desert. They are trained to be soldiers.. to kill and be killed to defend our nation from other countries. Like those extremists in afghanistan who destroyed world trade.. we sent our soldiers there to stop these morons from attacking us again.. we brought the war to them instead of them bringing war to us. So is the police. police guys arrest the bad guys in our streets. theyre both honored as well. But the Soldiers in Iraq for example doesnt have the luxury of holding their wife at night or seeing their family compared to police who are here inside US
