United States Fencing Association sends squad for Wheelchair Pan American Games, Sao Paulo

The United States Fencing Association has sent the team of Paralympic Fencers who are going to compete in the Wheelchair Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil from August 13. United States has sent total ten fencers for competing in Paralympic competitions.
The following are the athletes who will compete in the different categories of weapon in individual and team events.
Dennis Aspy, Mario Rodriguez and Corbin Beu are going to compete in Category a Foil Men’s Team competition while Ryan Estep, Gerard Moreno are representing United States in Men’s Foil B Category Team events.
In Men’s Epee A Category Team events, Texan, Gary Van Der Wiege and Corbin Beu will participate whereas, Joey Brinson and the all rounder, Ryan Estep will participate in Men’s Epee Team Category B events.
The US Paralympic Women athletes will be participating in the Category A of Foil and Epee disciplines only. United State’s Catherine Bouwkamp, Sonia Fogal and Sonya Perduta will compete in Women’s Epee Team event of A Category and Women’s Foil Team event
of A Category as well. Andrea DeMello is a four-time Paralympian was set to fight in B category event of Women. As B category events are not being held, so she is not competing in the current tournaments.
Mario Rodriguez, who is competing in the Category A of Men’s Foil Team contests, is also a three-time Paralympian. He had been competing in the Sabre events as well. Rodriguez has taken the top position in his career which is 10th that he grabbed
in the Athens Games. In Sao Paulo, Sabre event is not being scheduled. Therefore, Mario will be competing in the Men’s Foil A Category events only.
Ryan Estep is participating in both Epee and Foil events in B categories. Estep is one of the top fencers who have won numerous gold, silver and bronze medals in the wheelchair World Cup tournaments. Catherine Bouwkamp, the reigning Wheelchair National Champion
is also competing in both Epee and Foil contests. It will be interesting to see how the US wheelchair fencing team fairs at the Pan American Games in Sao Paulo.
