I am nineteen years old and have decided to join the USMC. I want to be an mp and once retired from the Marines I would like to work in law enforcement...Either local or Federal.

I have told my family once or twice yet the conversations were brief and went nowhere. What do you think is the best way for me to tell them? Any answer will be appreciated.

  1. Your gonna have to tell them anyway your can..Your about to commit to becoming a Marine and yet you can not tell you parents this decision..

    Just tell them

  2. Go speak with a Marine Recuiter and explan this to him. He will have ideas and ways to help you in explaining to Mom and Dad your goals in your future as a United States Marine. He may even offer to come to your home and help you in explaining.

  3. Talk with a recruiter and have your family come with you.  My son told us he wanted to join the Marines and I wasn't happy about it.  But once I realized why he felt the USMC was what he wanted and I realized how badly he wanted it, I had to support him.

  4. If you want law enforcement, join somebody else, Army, AF, Navy as a 3rd option. If you retire at 20 you're going to be too old unless you have POST training in the military.

A tour in the military is a step up for Federal, but you might do just as well joining the local police dept right off the bat. Get a criminal justice degree or some college, join the sheriff, local PD.

Law enforcement is not the military.

  5. If you want to be a Marine you must face up to your responsibilities.

    Tell  them of your decision.

You are going to take an oath, it is not something  where you can change  your mind in a few days or weeks.

Once you are certain, make your commitment and try your best.

Don't make the mistake of looking back and say I could have done better.

  6. Dont forget about an education...All Federal Jobs require some sort of education (4 year degree min) when dealing with law enforcment....

More and more local, and state law enforcements organizations are also requiring education...

Back to your question.....Tell them upfront... they will either except it, or they wont...your 19, its your life.

  7. im 19 as well and this is my plan  for when i enlist and leave for boot camp im not telling any of my family..... i live in chicago so just be for i get on the plane to go to boot camp im going to call my family and just telling them im leaving right now to go to boot camp and ill see them in a little over 3 months ......but i got to get into to better shape and lose some weight frist

  8. Tell them straight up. My family, particulary my mother, kept asking me "why." I had to be cold about it and told her that if she has to ask she'll never understand.

  9. Just tell them that you have decided to serve as a Marine. Give your reasons.

I 'dog' the Marines, but I actually respect them as the valuable asset they are.
