United States Open 2010: Women’s Draw Preview
The U.S. Open is about to start in a few days time and the excitement is soaring. But how are things shaping up for the women's draws? According to experts, Caroline Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters are expected to win the top favourites award to win the title but can they really do it?
Top seeds Caroline as well as Clijsters faced each other last year in the final of the United States Open - a clash which was eventually won by Kim in straight sets. If they both manage to start the competition with strong victories in their opening matches this season, then a final match is once again expected at this years’ event.
With Serena Williams unable to defend her 900 points, second ranked tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki could overtake her and win the top spot in world rankings.
At the moment, Caroline is one thousand four hundred and eighty five points behind Serena Williams. With the American’s inability to defend the 900 points collected by her in 2009, Caroline is left with a total of five hundred and eighty five points to settle down the gap.
If the world number two Caroline successfully defends her Pilot Pen title in New Heaven this week, she will certainly preserve her four hundred and seventy points from last year’s Pilot Pen competition. In case she manages to win the United States Open 2010 in New York, she will get a total of two thousand ranking points and that would be a six hundred point up gradation over her finals appearance from the last year.
Bettor.com takes a look at the top eight favourites from the women’s side to win the title at Flushing Meadows:
Kim Clijsters at +350 (7/2) with Bodog, Maria Sharapova at +450 (9/2) with Extra bet, Caroline Wozniacki at +1000 (10/1) with Blue Square, Victoria Azarenka at +1100 (11/1) with Victor Chandler, Venus Williams at +1200 (12/1) with Victor Chandler ,Svetlana Kuznetsova at +1800 (18/1) with Victor Chandler, Vera Zvonareva at +2000 (20/1) with Victor Chandler and Elena Dementieva is at +2400 (24/1) with Bwin.
According to experts, the betting odds for Kim Clijsters are lower than expected. Caroline’s odds on the other hand are higher at this stage with her regular odds sitting at +450 (9/2). Maria Sharapova has also received inflated odds to win the U.S. Open 2010.
The betting odds for Kuznetsova and Pavlyuchenkova have been underrated in the market. Both of them have recently won hard surface trophies with Caroline’s Rogers Cup title being the most significant. Kuznetsova on the other hand has also won the San Diego title where as Pavlyuchenkova captured the Istanbul Cup this year.
In spite of the fact that Istanbul Cup 2010 is itself an important hard court title for Pavlyuchenkova, her current seventh favourite position in the list to win the United States Open tennis tournament at the Flushing Meadows is justified by her performances at the ATP Cincinnati Masters. It was in this tournament that she made her way into the semi-final round of the contest after getting the better of Yanina Wickmayer as well as Elena Dementieva.
The Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters captured the Cincinnati Masters a few days ago. However, that still does not make her the top seed to win the U.S. Open in New York. The American tennis ace Venus Williams on the other hand has not won a hard court trophy in 2010. A tough competition is indeed in the making.
