United States and dual citizenship?

I've heard that the US does not "recognize" dual citizenship, but do they really care? if you held two passports one being US and the other from a European Union country would there be any troubles or is this perfectly legal? Also, do you have to give up your US citizenship if you become an EU citizen?

  1. dual citizenship is accepted by the U.S govt.

    (Germany don't allow dual citizen)

    U.S. Department of State website

A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship.

However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.

  4. Lots of US citizens have dual nationality, so it doesn't matter. US just say they may not be able to protect you when you broke law in your other country and get arrested.

  5. It used to be possible for Canadians to hold dual citizenship, especially those living in L.A. But you need to check because the government does recognize dual citizenship with several muslim countries.

  6. I have heard about the risk that if you go to one embassy or consulate, they'll say go to your other citizenship's embassy or consulate
