United States bags fifth position in the Pan American Games - Volleyball
The final day of the Pan American Games men’s national volleyball tournament was played in the Mexican city of Guadalajara on the Saturday, October 29. Various position matches took place on the day with the contest for the fifth place taking place between
United States and Canada. The five set battle gave the Americans a win and a fifth place finish.
The first set of the match was competitive and both the sides stayed neck to neck with each other for the most part of the game. However, in the later stages, the Canadians started to hold more sway and bag themselves a win eventually. The loss of the opening
set did not sit too well with the Americans and they were able to come out strong in the second set and dominate the frame to get a smothering win that equalised the match.
Capitalising on the confidence generated at winning the second set, the Americans were able to take their momentum into the third set too that ended in favour of the U.S. losing two sets got the Canadians worried and they subsequently pushed themselves into
action and put up a good fight to bag the fourth set and gave themselves a winning chance in the fifth frame.
The last set of the match was long and hard and kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. However, it was the American side that was able to seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 21-25 and 19-17.
The coach of the American side, John Speraw, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close: “It was just another five sets match, Canada had a difficult service and everything was reduced
to the last set.”
While the captain of the American team, Evan Patak shared his views by giving the following statement: “It was our destiny to go to five sets, but this time we could get the info of our rivals.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Canadian team, Vincent Pichette, gave this statement regarding the loss that his team suffered: “It was a good experience and we appreciate the support of the fans of Guadalajara.”
The player that was able to tally the most points in the American side Eric Vance with a total of 21 points while the highest point maker was the Canadian Spencer Leiske with 24 points.
