United States upsets Italy in Women’s Water Polo: Quarterfinal – London Olympic Games
United States upsets Italy in the Quarterfinal of Women’s Water Polo match on ninth day of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Sunday, August 5.
The match remained one sided from the start, as the American team proved their dominance over Italian squad from the start of the match. With their continued efforts in the four-quarter game, USA kept on enhancing their lead and strengthened their position for the victory.
Nonetheless, the match seemed quite tough in the start as Italy scored the opening goals of the game but USA then fired back and showed no mercy to their opposing team by scoring equivalent goals. Italy notched up three goals in the first quarter while USA just managed to level out the score in the last three seconds of the round.
In the second quarter, USA spoiled the party of Italian team as they did not allow them to pass the ball in their cage and Italy failed to show any improvement on the scorecard. In contrast, USA accomplished three goals in second round, doubling their lead to that of Italy as the score went up to 6-3 after the first half.
The third quarter saw some sluggish efforts from American players, as they did not show any improvement on their part and failed to score a single goal. Nevertheless, Italy managed to score one goal in the third round but of course, they needed to score more in order to strengthen their place for victory and the score remained 6-4, USA being in the lead.
In the fourth quarter, USA geared up their efforts and smothered Italy by accomplishing three goals. On the contrary, Italy managed to pass the ball twice in American goal and lost the match with a deficit of three goals, as the score remained 9-6 after the fourth quarter.
Tania di Mario of Italy notched up three goals in the game and played a vital role in her team’s victory.
In addition, United States now will lock horns with Australia in the semi-final on Tuesday, August 7.
