Question:

Univ Manchester--what to expect?

I'm from Texas and pretty soon I'll be moving to the UK by myself to go to the University of Manchester. What should I expect when I first arrive or the first week to be like? Also, if you could give me any advice on places to go, important things to know about the University or the city, or places I can meet people (I don't know anyone there : /), I would really appreciate it. I'm so nervous!

  1. manchester is a brilliant city! the Uk's 2nd city! you will have a fantastic time! great night life and music scene! the people are very friendly...it does have some bad areas just like all major cities! but there are LOADS of students here! you will fit in perfectly! lots of other ppl in the same boat as u.

  2. just stay away from Moss-Side in Manchester because if you do go there you will be shot at.

and all the students usually end up in bars on Oxford Road, and Princess street i think, which it is near the two universities

  3. avoid at ALL costs:

    Moss side

    Cheetham Hill

    Lower Broughton

    Levenshulme

    Longsight

They are seriously rough areas in Manchester and its not a joke they are notorious for gun murders.

BUT, don't fear, lots of other areas in Manchester are really nice! The uni location is fairly central so you should be fine, it will be a local community of students.

The night life and shopping is fantastic.

Things to know include the of course world known football club Manchester United! Old Trafford you may know is their home ground.  (some people will be Manchester City fans, there is quite a rivalry!)

Also know that it was famous for music with bands like Oasis, The Happy Mondays, The Smiths, and many more all hailing from Manchester. The Hacienda Night club (no longer in existance) was very famous for the music scene.

Famous painter L.S Lowry hailed from Salford and painted many scenes from there.

    Enjoy
