Universal indicator..?

many indicators have a single acid colour and a single base colour. why is it that a universal indicator shows a number of colours?

  1. Because there are different levels of acidity… telling you if a substance is highly acidic… kinda acidic… neural… basic…very basic


  2. each colour represents a different pH value. eg, green is neutral(pH 7). if it turns red, it shows that the substance is super acidic (aroundpH 2).
