Question:

Universities in Australia?

I currently go to a university in Canada, and am thinking about going on a student exchange program to a university in Australia. My choices are University of Western Sydney, Deakin University, Monash University, and Flinders University. Could anyone give me any insight into which of these universities are better, and also how the cities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney are (where the universities are located)?

  1. To answer your question about where the universities are located, you can use Google Maps, a new feature on Google for pretty much every road in Australia.

  2. try and get into UNSW or Sydney-they r the best academically and culturally (in my opinion as a sydney sider =))

if not i'd either say Monash or western sydney

  3. Monash and Deakin are both in Melbourne, in the south east of Aus.  Their main campuses are both suburban:  Deakin is in Burwood, which is about 45 mins from the Melbourne CBD by tram.  Monash is in Clayton, which is about 1 hour from the CBD by public transport. Their other main campus is in Caulfield, a lot closer in and more central.  Both Deakin and Monash are quite 'insular' in their campuses, as being urban, they create all their own facilities, etc.  But, outside uni hours, being in Melbourne is great.  Melbourne is one of Aus's biggest cities - over three million people, and I have been told by Canadian friends that it "feels" like vancouver (if that makes ANY sense...).  I live in Melb, and adore it.  Of your list, Monas is the only member of the "Group of 8", the consortium of Australia's leading universities.

Flinders is in Adelaide.  It's a smaller, quieter city. If you wanted to travel while here, Adelaide is pretty isolated, so you'd be paying more for flights etc. It's a nice place, but not sure that it'd give you the best experience of Aus if you were to live there rather than  in your other options

Uni. of Western Sydney has some of the same issues as the main campuses of Monash and Deakin, and the same benefits.  You can always choose to live off campus if you want the sydney experience, and it's a fun city (though I do prefer Melbourne).
