University Kuala Lumpur close to win their first MJHL title: Junior Hockey
The University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) Hockey Club is only one game away from acquiring their first ever title in the Division One of the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL). In the second last game, UniKL thrashed Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) by straight
six goals, 6-0 played at the field of Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium in the metropolis city of Malaysia.
Mohd Zulhairi Hisham, an experienced defender of UniKL, displayed an impressive game and was the real architect of the triumph. He scored a hat-trick in the crucial match and assisted his team to win a convincing game against talented BPSS. The resilient
defence of overall champions kept the BPSS strikers off the score-board throughout the 70 minutes of play.
The match started on a very high tone, as the strikers of UniKL carried out back-to-back strikes. With ten minutes into the game, Zulhairi scored first goal of the day to put UniKl ahead on the score-board. With one goal lead, the confidence level of UniKL
players has doubled and they started a more aggressive game.
Zulhairi nailed another goal in the 10th minute of the game and doubled the tally. An end-to-end play was observed from the two sides in the remaining period of the first half of play. The BPSS team though received a couple of goal-scoring chances,
but failed to do so. UniKL was leading the game by two goals 2-0 at the end of the first half of play.
Mohd Shamim Yusof scored first goal of the day in the 41st minute of the game and expanded the lead up to three goals. The UniKL defensemen denied numerous strikes from the BPSS team. Zulhairi and Manraj Singh scored one goal apiece respectively,
in the 60th and 61st minutes of the game to take an insurmountable lead in the game. With two minutes left on the clock, Mohd Izad Hakimi added a goal to seal the UniKL victory at 6-0.
It is vital to mention here that UniKL won all the eight games played so far in the league and needs one more win to clinch the first title of the MJHL. UniKL has had very impressive track record in the junior league, as they marked 46 goals in the last
eight appearances and conceded only four goals. They will meet BPSS-Thunderbolt in the final contest of the league on April 24, 2011.
S. Velappan – the trainer of UniKL while speaking to the media said that they are quite assured for their victory in the league. Applauding the role of hat-trick man, he further stated that Zulhairi was in good form and delivered an outstanding performance.
They would have to work hard against BPSS-Thunderbolt in the last crucial match.
