Question:

University UCAS points question

OK.

In September, I will be doing my second year of college. I'm doing Applied ICT. The course is worth 240 points (as what Edexcel said). My tutor said my aim is for 200 points.

If ever I get 200 points, does that mean I won't be able to apply for Unis that require more than 200 UCAS points? Also, I'm doing Key Skills (Communications and Application of Number). Do they also give me UCAS points?

Help would be appreciated as I only found one Uni that matches my situation.

  1. Im sure you can aim for more than 200 points...teachers always give you a lower estimate because they don't wanna seem wrong if you don't do so well, or to give you a higher sense of achievement when you do go above their predicted grades. Of course you can apply for universities asking for more than 200 points. Plus as you said your doing another module you will get ucas points for it too if its counted as an Alevel, usually its general studies most unis don't accept.

I remember teachers telling me i couldn't apply for a university of London university because my grades wouldn't be so high, yet i worked hard, and i got offers from 3 of them and in the end i'm going to one of the top 10 universities in London. So aim high for yourself and do work hard.

When applying, apply for ones which you think u can get...like if you know your definitely not gonna get an AAA but its possible that you can get a BBC then apply for courses like that, you never know what might happen and in the end the worst that can happen is that they turn you down, but then there is always clearing which gives students lots of choices as a backup.

    Goodluck with it all.

  2. You need more than 200 UCAS points for a course with entry requirements above 200.

Key skills do gain you some UCAS points but not all uni's take them into account. Although some who don't count them do frown on people who could have taken them and didn't (Birmingham uni for one).

Also some uni's only look at certain courses, e.g. they will give places to A Level students but not BTEC students.

Just because a course says it requires 240 points does not stop you from applying for it.

apply for the courses you want and talk to the individual uni's about it

  3. Key skills will give the following UCAS points:

    Level 2 - 10 points

    Level 3 - 20 points

    Level 4 - 30 points.

As for the general point of your question, I think you're saying that you are expected to get 200 UCAS points right? You need to research the number of points you need for each course you want to apply to. for example, say you are expected to have 210 points, there is no point applying for a uni course worth 300 points. Go for a few courses, and have atleast one with the exact or just below your number of expexted points. It's possible that you could get an offer for a course usually needing 230 points, but this will not be guarenteed and is dependent on who else applies for the course.

Just do your research I'm sure you'll find a course for you worth around 200 points.

  4. If a course requires you to have 240 ucas points then you will need to get 240 or more but saying that you can ring the university up once your results are out as sometimes they will let you in regardless if you are only down by a few points say 220.  Another option would be for you to wait till August time and apply through Clearing, if there are spaces left on the course the University will most likely accept you even if you have 200 ucas points as they loose out on money on courses which are not filled.

And yes Key skills will also count towards your UCAS points.

  5. teachers nowadays, tut tut.

you should 'aim' for the best my dear lad.

back in the day, when i was doing my a'levels, i had a few home problems (my dad died) and so didn't reach all the grades i needed to get into my desired course. what did i do when i found my results? i called the uni course tutor and pleaded - and got in -

just prove your worth and you can go anywhere
