Question:

University in Denmark?

HI, I am planning to study a year out of my degree course in English (Literature and Language) and Linguistics in Denmark, in the University of Aarhus. I was wondering about any experiences of studying in Denmark, or Aarhus, particularly in the fields of arts and humanities. If possible, could you offer some contrasts or comparrisons between the two university systems? I am wondering if it could be more difficult etc. Thank-you.

  1. Hi Lauren

The University of Aarhus is normally considered of quite high academic standards  - same goes for the English department.

Now - I guess you're American - you might get somewhat of a surprise since the way Danish universities work is that they are not placed on a separate campus but is more or less a part of the city. This means that there is no campus culture but blends with the surrounding area.

Students mix with the rest of the society much more than on an American university.

Århus is the second largest Danish city and with 12 percent of its population being students students is a very visible part of a vibrant and charming city. The University campus is placed very close to the city center and you will probably be living off campus. Maybe in dorms/residence hall, maybe in a private housing/apartment block or even as a tenant in a private house.

Language challenges will not be a problem for you since you'll be surprised to learn how many Danes actually speak English.

As for academic standards you won't find studying in Denmark as competitive as a US college or university.

Good luck - and hope to see you in Aarhus (=Århus in Danish).
