University of California, Santa Barbara defeats Long Beach State University men’s volleyball team
Thursday night saw two semi-final matches of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament take place between four of the top teams in the nation.
One of the semis featured the number one ranking University of Southern California men’s volleyball team who contested against the number two ranked University of California, Irvine.
As expected, the match between the two teams was thrilling and went on for four sets. In the end, the team that was able to bag the win for themselves was USC.
The other semi-final match that took place on the same day at the Galen Centre saw the Long Beach State University men’s volleyball team compete against the number fifth ranked University of California, Santa Barbara.
As with the other semi final match, the one between the 49ers as well as the Gauchos took four thrilling sets to reach its close. Upon its end, the team that earned itself a win and now will be competing against the Trojans on Saturday for the championship
title is UC Santa Barbara.
The team that will be able to win the deciding match on Saturday will not only have the honour of being called the champions of the MPSF, they will also have another advantage. The winner will secure itself a position in the Final Four of the National Collegiate
Athletic Association.
By the time that the Gauchos had won the fourth set of the game and sealed the doom of the 49ers, the scoreboard read as 25-17, 26-28, 25-20, 25-23.
The number of times that the 49ers have been able to earn themselves a win in this season so far total to be 15. The 49ers have secured themselves these wins at the high cost of incurring defeats that amount to be 14.
In contrast to this, the Gauchos have not been able to perform much better than the 49ers. The Gauchos have had victories that tally at the figure of 16. The number of times that they have suffered losses sum up to equal the amount of 14.
The first set of the match saw the 49ers take the lead early on at 3-0. However, the Gauchos were able to gain dominance once the Connor Olbright, the setter of the 49ers was injured. After the 49ers experienced this slight bump, they were not completely
able to recover. As a result, the Gauchos took the first set of the match at 25-17.
Having lost the opening set of the game, the 49ers came out strong in the second set. The improvement in the performance of the 49ers pressurised the Gauchos who lost the set at 26-28.
However, the second set was the only one that the 49ers were able to secure as they lost the next sets at 25-20 and 25-23 respectively.
