University of California men’s volleyball team sweeps University of California, Santa Barbara
The University of California men’s volleyball team did it again. They handed out a defeat to the University of California, Santa Barbara by making a clean sweep over them on Saturday.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, UCSB did not make it easy for USC to bag each set of the game. By the time that the match had reached its close and both the teams were moving out of the courts- one disappointed while the other jubilant- the scoreboard
showed the following final set scores: 25-21, 25-21, 30-28.
With their recent loss, the Gauchos now have a total of 14 losses overall in this season. They have also been able to register an equal number of wins so far. If the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record of the Gauchos is considered, it shows a somewhat
similar story. The number of times that UCSB has tallied victories amount to be 11. The number of their defeats in the MPSF also equals the same figure.
Being the number one team in the nation, both the overall season record as well as the MPSF statistics of the Trojans is impressive. The number of times that the Trojans have secured themselves victories in the season so far tally at a figure of 21. In comparison,
they have just had two occasions in which the Trojans have come off as losers. The MPSF statistics of the Trojans show their total number of wins to be 20. They have been able to register these victories while undergoing only one loss.
The aspect of the Trojan play that stood out the most in their win was the blocking done by USC. The Gauchos had a really hard time getting their balls to the ground at the Trojan side of the court.
“They just had a few points here and there that went their way,” senior outside hitter Jeff Menzel of the Gauchos said. “They were also a little more comfortable serving in their home court than we were which allowed for them to have a good blocking night.”
The opening set of the match saw both the teams fight hard for the lead. For long, it wasn’t sure towards which side the tables would turn. As the game reached its middle stages, the Trojans and the Gauchos were tied at 18-18. The Trojans were able to push
past the Gauchos as this point and take the lead for themselves. Once they had the lead, the Trojans did not look back until they had bagged the first set of the game at 25-21.
The second set of the match was also competitive but the Trojans were able to seal the deal on it at 25-21 as well. In the third set, the Gauchos put on a real fight but the effort came in too late as the Trojans won it at 30-28.
Next in line for the Gauchos is a match against BYU over the weekend.
