University of Connecticut open to having game hockey players on team
In a one of a kind move in the sport, the University of Connecticut willingly announced that they would welcome g*y hockey players on their team through promotional videos released by the institution called “You Can Play”.
The initiative might not be considered to be that big in the nation now, but since most places still show hatred towards some people’s difference in sexual orientation, the University of Connecticut attempted to work towards ending homophobia in the sport
of hockey.
Since sports like hockey are in nature, close contact, many players feel uncomfortable around teammates who they know to be homosexual. In order to spread awareness on the situation and enlighten g*y players to come forward and play with dignity, the university
thinks that this is the starting step of many to come in the near future.
"We thought it was a great idea to show the community how we feel about homosexuality in sports, and let people know that anyone can play on our team," said UConn captain, Sean Ambrosie.
It is not hidden that most g*y individuals are targeted on a daily basis, either in terms of violence against them or hate talk. These things definitely decline their morale and confidence in showing off their true talents, since some just might be great
hockey players.
Some are still of the view that such an act should not have been done by the university. One of those people is Peter Wolfgang, who is acting president of the conservative Family Institute of Connecticut Action.
"It's a very loaded political term," Wolfgang said. "If we're going to be against bullying, then we ought to be against all forms of bullying and not just the kind that get us a pat on the back from politically correct elites. I would hope that people that
have traditional beliefs, traditional faiths that they would not be bullied for holding views about morality or the definition of marriage."
As of yet, the move is still in its first stages as it attracts a lot of support from some circles and criticism from others. Ultimately, there is no way that everyone may be satisfied, but these small steps surely work towards making some people’s lives
better.
