University of Melbourne wins Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay title – 2011 Australian University Games
Day two of the 2011 Australian University Games saw the scintillating performance of University of Melbourne’s squad in Gold Coast, Australia, on Wednesday, September 28. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 4x100m freestyle event.
In the corresponding race, University of Melbourne’s team of Marieke Guehrer, Grace Loh, Nicolette Lyttle and Jessica Morrison snared the golden crown with a winning mark of 4 minutes and 02.82 seconds. More importantly, University of Melbourne thrashed
down Queensland’s previous best meet record of 4 minutes and 04.99 seconds, set back in 2010.
Meanwhile, University of Queensland’s group of four athletes including Jessica Henshaw, Kate Thompson, Rebecca Pegg and Elise Hoyer put up a good performance and won the silver medal on the podium by posting a matchless time of 4 minutes and 15.67 seconds.
In the corresponding splash, Bond University’s squad of Laura Van, Bec Thompson, Amy Reid and Jade Neilsen secured bronze medal on the podium with a sterling mark of 4 minutes and 24.10 seconds. Monash University’s quarter of Samantha Bennett, Melissa Murphy,
Amanda Barnhoorn and Renee Campbell rounded out the top four in a time of 4 minutes and 34.53 seconds.
Macquarie University’s team of Nicola O’Brien, Natalie Steel, Rachel Horler and Melissa Rudgley earned fifth place honours with an impressive mark of 4 minutes and 47.25 seconds. The top-three winning contestants of the race were awarded accolades after
the session’s completion.
Earlier in the day, Atte Liimatanien won the Men’s 100m back-stroke title with a victorious mark of 58.72 seconds. Andrew Gillespie of Queensland University of Technology captured the silver title by submitting a winning time of 59.04 seconds, whereas, Thomas
Moreton of Monash University settled for bronze medal in the respective meet after he touched the finishing wall and ended his swim in a time of 1 minute and 00.64 seconds.
The 2011 Australian University Games is an important event for young guns of Australia, as it will provide them with a golden opportunity to prepare for other upcoming meets. The championships are scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2011.
