University of Melbourne’s swimmers impress in Gold Coast – Swimming news
Day three of the 2011 Australian University Games saw the wonderful swim of the University of Melbourne’s athletes in the freestyle relay final heat, in Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland, on Thursday, September 29. The session of the university games
conducted the Women’s 4x50m freestyle relay final race, where University of Melbourne’s crew powered the finishing wall with an inspiring mark of 1 minute and 49.18 seconds to clinch golden crown on the podium.
In the meantime, Queensland University of Technology’s line-up, Amy Cullen, Hannah Mullen, Rebecca Harry and Madeleine Van settled for silver with a time of 1 minute and 53.13 seconds. The bronze title went to University of Queensland’s contestants, Elise
Hoyer, Katrina Schieber, Jessica Henshaw and Rebecca Pegg with an inspiring mark of 1 minute and 55.62 seconds.
Monash University’s squad, Samantha Bennett, Melissa Murphy, Amanda Barnhoorn and Renee Campbell settled for fourth spot in 1 minute and 58.90 seconds, while Bond University’s Laura Van, Bec Thompson, Amy Reid and Jade Neilsen earned fifth position in 1
minute and 59.67 seconds. In addition, Flinders University settled for sixth spot in a time of 2 minutes and 01.15 seconds.
In the corresponding swim, Rmit University’s Alexandra Brown, Teagan Nugent, Claire Mccormack and Kelsey Huckin Mccloskey wound up seventh in 2 minutes and 02.92 seconds. University of Technology’s squad Rebecca Cahill, Caryn Streeter, Angela Chau and Stephanie
Purcell earned eighth place in 2 minutes and 03.34 seconds.
La Trobe University of Australia was placed ninth in a time of 2 minutes and 13.83 seconds, whereas, Australian National University finished tenth in 2 minutes and 15.50 seconds. Finally, University of Western Australia settled eleventh in 2 minutes and
19.25 seconds.
In the Men’s 4x50m freestyle relay final heat, Bond University’s Bruce Mcgregor, Chris Dolling, Sam Hourigan and Gene Kubala claimed gold in 1 minute and 37.98 seconds. Meanwhile, Queensland University of Technology and Macquarie University settled for silver
and bronze in 1:38.39 minutes and 1:38.45 minutes, respectively.
University of Sydney and Monash University earned fourth and fifth spots in 1:38.69 minutes and 1:39.86 minutes, respectively. Last, but not the least, University of Melbourne and University of New South Wales settled for sixth and seventh places in a time
of 1 minute and 39.96 and 1 minute and 40.24 seconds, respectively.
The stunning swims of all these swimmers captured the attention of Gold Coast’s crowd and the triumphant were honoured with accolades after the session’s completion.
The 2011 Australian University Games is providing an awesome opportunity to all young guns of Australia to prepare themselves hard for their futuristic meets which include the London Olympics, in 2012.
