University of T&T defeats Glamorgan in title match of Caribbean Invitational Volleyball League
The final of the Caribbean Invitational Volleyball League – Women took place between the University of T&T and Glamorgan over the weekend. The venue of the title match was the Jean Pierre Complex in Mucurapo. The UTT had a tough time defending its champion’s
title as Glamorgan stretched the fight to five intense sets but UTT prevailed by bagging the win at 3-2.
The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 27-29, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 17-15.
The first set of the match started off with Glamorgan taking the lead early on. However, the UTT squad was not ready to let matters slip by easily and they managed to pull up ahead of their rivals. The score remained close all through the opening frame and
the set saw quite a few ties. The outcome was still undetermined near the end of the set as it went on to a few set points after which Glamorgan was finally able to get its hands on the frame at 29-27.
The second set too commenced in much the same way as the first one with Glamorgan in the lead from the beginning of the frame. The UTT side managed to turn the tables but only for a little while as their rivals succeeded in grabbing the advantage again.
The UTT did not give up and kept on the heels of their opponents but Glamorgan proved to be too strong as they went on to secure the second frame as well at 25-23.
The third set seemed to head in favour of the Glamorgan squad as well for they were leading comfortably at 18-14. However, UTT was not about to go down easily and they were able to rally themselves together to get ahead of their rivals. Before long, UTT
had bagged the third set of the match at 25-23 and saved themselves from being swept in the final match.
The fourth and the fifth sets were equally competitive as the previous ones but UTT prevailed in securing both the frames.
The player that was able to get her hands on the Most Valuable Player of the match award was Krystle Esdelle from the winning side. On the other hand, Rechez Lindsay from the winning team was able to grab the titles of the Best Libero as well as the Best
Digger.
UTT as the winning team was able to keep the title as well as get their hands on the US$5,000 winners' cheque.
