University of Toronto Admission!!??

Hello!

I got an alternate offer from University of Toronto Mississauga for Social Science at an average of 72.3%. But by the end of high school my average dropped even more and it came down to 67%. I went to summer school and got a better mark in Calculus and Vectors. Before I had a mark of 65% in that class, but in summer school I got 86% in the same class. That mark brought my average up making it more than 70%. The admissions department sent me a letter asking what when wrong with my marks and I sent them a letter explaining it to them. I have signed up for a @utoronto.ca email address already and I have also got my UTORid. I have signed on to Portal/Blackboard many times. I have already enrolled onto ROSI for my courses. I have applied for my OSAP and already have deferred the fees (they have to get back to me about my deferral in a day or two). I have been receiving emails from the UTM staff as well for several stuff.

They haven't replied back to me as to whether or not I will be keeping my acceptance. I checked my admission status and it says the conditions have not been met (it doesn't say refused), but that was there before I sent the explanation letter in and I talked to the a lady in the Admissions and Recruitment office at UTM and she told me that I probably won't lose my offer but they might restrict me to part-time studies.

My question is that will they be sending me an email or a letter in the mail telling me if I get to keep my offer or not? I ask this because we have to pay our tuition by August 18 and I am worried sick about this whole situation.

Thanks in advance.

  1. MT, call some one at the Registrars office and or get an appointment personally.  I don't think there should be any problem for you. The worst they could do is ask you to do a few courses and maintain a 70% in those course as a conditional offer.  I don't think they will boot you out for a 2.3 % drop in average.

Show interest by calling and asking them - don't wait for a letter unless they ask you wait for one.

I live in Mississauga and actually went there several years ago - they are pretty fair / understanding

Worst case if they don't let you in - don't panic - its not the end of the world. I went to UofT and graduated - I don't use any knowledge I gained there.  The world is full of opportunities, schools, and roles.

Have faith in yourself and work hard - I can guarantee you will be doing something totally different from what you expect when you finish school :)

Cheers and best of luck in your studies

  2. As a UTSG student myself, I know first hand that U of T is extremely slow in terms of responding to e-mails and updating online information (since there are so many students and whatnot). Your best bet is to contact the school directly (call/visit, NOT e-mail) and ask them what you should do.

If the lady said that you shouldn't lose your offer, it is likely that you won't. However, it is possible that the school would put you on academic probation, meaning you have to keep a certain mark in order to stay in school.

As for your question, YES, you should get an e-mail or a letter regarding your status at the school. However, this is very time-consuming, so again, your best bet is to contact the registrar's office.

As for tuition, just pay it. If you do end up getting 'rejected', you can easily get your money back... it's not as if they will take your money and refuse to pay it back. If you don't take any courses there, you should get your FULL tuition back. (if you paid for residence, you will probably lose your deposit).
