Question:

University residence vs. flat?

I'm going to do a masters in Bristol. I'm an international student. Should I stay at one of the university residences or should I make an early trip to look for independent lodging (i.e. getting an apartment with a room/flat mate)?

My instinct tells me that I should go throught the hassle of finding my own accommodation as living in a residence might feel like going to boarding school (not that I'm criticizing but I'm 25 so...). However, living in a residence might have its advantages; the internet is set up, there is a laundry room in the building, I'm close to my classes and it might even be easier to make friends.

So I guess the question is; what pro's and con's can you come up with? Why should I rent a flat or why should I go to the residence? (Bear in mind I'm an international student).

I'd like the practical feedback of people who have been in my shoes or who have a son or daughter that has been in my situation, not random advice like "do what you prefer."

  1. I would go for residence as you will make friends

  2. If your 25, you'll be a little older than a majority of students. I would recommend that you get an off-campus appartment. If often cheaper, and you dont have to deal with a bad roommate(if you get a bad roommate)

  3. if you're coming from abroad I think you would find the halls of residence best to start off with ... everything is all set up for you and a few months there would allow you to get to know the Bristol a bit before you start looking for your own place (there's some lovely areas of Bristol but there's also some not so nice ones) ... it might hopefully also allow you to get to know some of your fellow students and maybe you could look for a place together to keep the cost down ... I don't know whether you're tied in to a whole academic year if you opt for the halls of residence ... ideally you would only want a few months there before moving out as I'm sure in the long run you would much prefer your own place

  4. personally i'd prefer the apartment, am living in student accommodation at the moment. in an apartment you wouldn't have to share things like kitchen and showers with loads of other people.  its alright at first but trying to get a shower in the morning when most people are up at the same time can be a real hassle.

although it is a lot cheaper than an apartment which leaves you with more money to splash around and there would be a load of parties to go to on the weekend
