Question:

University school supplies?

I will be taking English and some art classes at university this fall. I will be waiting until classes start to buy my art supplies but I need to buy school supplies for English. I have a laptop to write essays and such, but I'm not sure what else I'll need. Are there any good lists out there? All I'm sure I need to buy are pens, pencils, a binder or notebook, highlighters, those little sticky tabs to find a page, a day planner (I suck at keeping track of dates), and report covers.

  1. thats pretty much all you need unless your professor specifically tells you to get something.

  2. I don't know any good lists, but I think you have a good amount of stuff.  I would make sure you also have a folder or two.  On my desk at home I have a stapler, print cartridges, a dictionary and thesaurus, burnable CDs, a printer and computer, envelopes, paper clips, tape, a 3 hole punch, pens, highliters, post-it notes, pencils, printer paper, resume paper, note paper, and photo paper.  At my school office I have pencils, pens, highliters, notebooks, folders, a binder, textbooks, a computer mouse, and some file folders.  So that's what I need for my grad program.  It's typical to what I had in college.  That's a list for you at least.

  3. Yeah that's good to have for your English class.  Usually professors aren't too picky unless you are taking a lab and need like a composition book for it to write down the experiment.  I would stock up now on what you have because usually if you run out in the middle of the year, it may be hard to find what you need and it will be much more expensive.  I'd also add to your list post-it notes, and index cards which can come in handy when writing papers or trying to study facts

  4. Generally, for an English class, you need a notebook (buy one that has a pocket so you can store handouts; or get a three-ring binder) and a pen to take notes, access to a computer to type your essays and homework, a printer, and a head start on the reading if you're a slow reader. A day planner is a good idea if you use it. I don't use a highlighter, but I use tons of Post-It notes (or sticky tabs) to keep track of pages or things I want to talk about in class. Sounds like you're all set already! Hope you're in one of my classes. ;o)

BTW: Check with your professor before wasting money on report covers. I hate those things. My colleagues and I tend to take all the essays out of them because we can't freely write in the margins of essays when they're stuck in the little report cover thingies. I much prefer two-pocket folders or just a plain old essay stapled together instead of being held in some fancy report holder. But that's my personal pet peeve ;o).

EDIT: Invest in a flash drive (USB) thingie to back up your work!!! My laptop died on me last semester and I was only OK b/c I'd saved everything on that. So many of my students lose points b/c of not having backed up on an alternate source than their laptops or computers.

  5. You have it all under control. I think if I were you I would just throw the day planner out the window. You will be forcing yourself into a system that you are not comfortable with. I know because every year I try forcing myself into keep a day planner, but just writing assignments down on the inside of my notebook does just fine. (I write it on the inside portion of the cover to the notebook. This way I don't rip it out and throw it away.)

  6. sounds good what you have. :)
