  1. You need a Phd or a professional doctorate.

  2. You will need a minimum of a master's degree with 18 graduate hours in the subject you plan to teach in order to be considered for the most basic teaching positions at the college/university level.

In order to get a tenure track (full-time professional) position you will need a PhD (or other appropriate doctorate) in the subject you plan to teach except in the few fields that require an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) such as theater, creative writing, and studio art.  It's important to understand that the degree needs to be in the subject you plan to teach and not in education/teaching (unless you plan to teach education courses).

There are no specific high school classes you need to take.  You should be concerned with maintaining the highest GPA you possibly can so that you can get accepted to a quality graduate program after your bachelor's degree.

Expect 7-9 total years of college to prepare for this career.
