Universum outraged by Sauerland Event Hepatitis B comments
World Boxing Association (WBA) titlist David Haye and mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev are gearing towards a WBA-headed purse bid, according to
boxingscene.com.
Negotiations between the two sides have halted as Klaus-Peter Kohl of Universum Promotions, who promotes Chagaev, is upset with comments coming from Haye’s side of the table regarding the status of Chagaev’s Hepatitis B.
Haye is promoted in partnership by Golden Boy Promotions and Sauerland Event. Universum is concerned only with comments attributed to Sauerland Event.
In the past, Chagaev’s Hepatitis B caused significant problems and derailed a title bout with Nikolai Valuev, also represented by Sauerland Event. When Valuev refused to fight Chagaev a second time, despite the availability of a vaccine for him to take to
avoid the virus, a fight was scheduled with Wladimir Klitschko.
"I have read statements made by Wilfried Sauerland and his son Kalle, and they have left me very annoyed. Here is another attempt to get our boxer Ruslan Chagaev out of their way," Kohl said. "We are not going to tolerate it a second time."
A second dispute erupted with regards to Haye wanting to have the fight in England.
Kohl presented his case, "According to the best virologists, he [Chagaev] is not contagious. Here again, a campaign against Ruslan starts. I will not permit it this time. For me, this is a sign that David Haye and Sauerland fear that they are going to lose
the belt and it could burst the big payday with Klitschko.
"Moreover, who says the fight against Haye will take place in England? If there is no agreement on the market, place and time, then the fight goes to a purse bid at the WBA's headquarters in Panama. And then the winning bidder has the right to make that
decision."
Hepatitis B is a virus that affects the liver and causes inflammation. Roughly, a third of the world’s population has been infected by the virus.
Though there are currently seven medications licensed for the treatment of Hepatitis B, the available treatments do not have the ability to clear the infection, only stop the virus from replicating, minimalising liver damage.
