  1. call the jockey club back and ask them to go through all the letters with you. have them look at the possibility of date / year of birth and match it to your horses estimated age. Also brands are not unheard of on a TB if they are from a large farm from Texas and some other western states. Also some countries such as Australia brand there TB's.

  2. Check for a lip tattoo.  I would guess the brand on her neck would be either from a former owner who did it for ID purposes, or she's been used as a recip mare somewhere for embryo transfers.  One of our vets is considering borrowing one of my mares to be a recip since I'm not breeding her right now and have too many others that need miles, and he told me that he would have to freeze brand her so that she'd have permanent ID at the facility she would be kept at.

  3. Standardbreds also get branded on their neck.  Some old Canadan Thoroughbreds had brands on their necks (I don't know if they still do this or not). You should be able to use a search engine for this.  Or you can go to a Blood stock, or Pedigree site.

  4. What kind of branding is it? The only branding that is usually on the neck of a horse it that of the wild mustang breed. If it is made up of symbles and shapes like a code then your thoroughbred is a mustang.

  5. take her upper lip and turn it up to see if there is a tattoo on the underside of the top lip, then see if you can read it, All  thoroughbreds are tattooed before they can race and that tattoo corresponds with a set of papers with her whole history, her racing name, who bred her, who owned her throughout her racing career, how many races she won,if any, and who her parents are.

Then you can call I believe(it has been so long) the jockey club and tell them the # and letters in her tattoo and they will send you a set of her papers.

The freeze brand could of came from anywhere.

    2 DAYS LATER:

Well, that is what I was afraid of those tattoos can become fuzzy. What you can do is see if there is a track in your area, and find out who does the tattooing there, and call him and see if he might be able to come out and help you figure what that last  letter or # could be, because some of the letters mean something like the year of birth etc., then there is also, that the tattoo, corresponds with the horses markings, so if you can find the exact year she was born, and research all the bay fillies with a star and one white rear left sock etc. you can narrow it down and keep narrowing it down, until you find her.

It will involve a lot of research, but the markings will be the key to your riddle because they are very exact.

I think the jockey club allow to go through their data base and possibly on line.

And also the circular hairs on horses are included in the written description of your horse. And they as unique as your fingerprint.

Well, I hope she has some unique markings and can pinpoint her year of birth with what you can read from her tattoo and maybe you will find her racing identity and don't forget that if you are near a race track or a concentration of breeding farms, such as Lexington, or Ocala, there will be a tattoo person there find that person, they can help you greatly.

    Good luck.

I have only seen I think 2 or 3 race horses with a freeze brand out of  tens of thousands of thoroughbreds, it is not something widely done so maybe, you can find out something from the brand,  like what farms in Ky. brand their horses? and if she had that brand before being tattoo it will be written in her description on her papers and then you can really narrow it down, by plugging into the jockey data base something like this, between the years 1980 and 1987 chestnut fillies with a star, one white left rear sock, white hairs at top of tail and a freeze brand on left side of neck that reads 054ws321....Something like this might help greatly.
