Question:

Unlicensed Female Masseuse Questions...?

I'm not licensed but have much experience (I'm self-taught). I would do deep-tissue and soft-touch (light strokes, light pressure) massage only. I have worked on family, friends, and aquaintances (all positive responses) but now want to do this for a second (part-time) income, and not for free any longer. I have placed an advertisement as 'Unlicensed Independent Masseuse In the Comfort Of Your Home' and have received numerous responses for appointments (my prices are also inexpensive b/c I'm not licensed). I am going to travel to clients homes and massage them. May sound odd but I've a few q's. Do I need a massage table? Also, if I go to a male's house, how safe would I be and how would I protect myself? Also... one asked if he could see my photo. I know some women post as female masseuses but offer prostitution, but I am NOT one of them. What do I tell men so I don't come across as a B**ch? Any suggestions?

  1. For one, in my area someone who advertises as a masseuse doesn't just do massages. People who do massages are known here as massage therapists. Your ad around here sounds like a prostitution ad.There's a difference between a masseuse and a massage therapist, at least in my city, so make sure you're saying what you mean before you advertise!! As far as I know, you do not need a degree to become a massage therapist, but you might need a license. Check with your city. If you do need a license, it shouldn't cost more than $75 annually depending on where you live.

One of my friend's moms was a massage therapist. She had her own table. This is generally more comfortable for the client and more professional for you. If you go to a male's house, I would set up an initial appointment, sort of like a consultation. That way you could see if you are comfortable with the client before you start. If you get a bad feeling at all, don't do it.

Try printing out a pamphlet of what services you DO offer. Make it clear that you are strictly a massage therapist and that customers should not expect anything more. Look up other massage therapists online and do a paraphrasing of their wording for their services.
