Unlock code for Samsung SGH X497 phone

Question

IS the unlock code specific for each phone of the same make and model?or specific for all of the same make and model.We have four Samsung SGH X497 phones with Cingular on the front of it.We are on S.S. and can't afford to get locked into an expensive contract.
